Lt. Cdr. Swift is a decorated Navy officer and lawyer whom the military detailed to represent Salim Ahmed Hamdan, a personal driver to Osama Bin Laden, before military commissions charging Hamdan with conspiracy to commit terrorism. This past summer the U.S. Supreme Court accepted Swift's claim that the military commissions were not lawfully constituted.  In June 2006, the National Law Journal named Swift as one of "The 100 most influential lawyers in America."

“The Making of a Torturer”

September 5, 2006

College of Law Auditorium

The use of torture is a major issue in American foreign policy. Closer to home, a special prosecutor in Chicago recently issued a report -- 4 years and $7 million in the making -- concluding that Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge and some of his Area 2 subordinates engaged in the systematic torture of criminal suspects. JOHN CONROY, who has covered this scandal for the Chicago Reader, will speak more generally about the use of torture by ordinary people in democracies around the world. JOHN CONROY is an alumnus of the University of Illinois, an author of two highly acclaimed books, and a multiple award-winning journalist.

This event was co-sponsored by the Department of Journalism.
